I would say Lawrenceville is more hipster than gay at this point, but they're certainly not mutually exclusive. Most of the bars/spaces are fairly straight, and they get pretty busy with non-locals during the weekend, but the gay bar on Butler, Blue Moon, is probably the most famous gay bar in Pittsburgh. Lawrenceville is also a popular neighborhood for gay folks, but it started gentrifying a while back and that's not going to stop any time soon. Overall, it's a pretty good mix of long time residents and younger folks, and you see a lot of progressive stores in the area (lots of BLM and democratic/socialist leaning signage). A lot of folks who got priced out of Shadyside and Lawrenceville ended up moving to Bloomfield/Garfield, so you can imagine it's population is more diverse. Brillobox and Mixtape were both fairly gay-friendly/had gay centric events, but they both shuttered during COVID. However, these neighborhoods don't have the dedicated gay bars/spaces that Shadyside and Lawrenceville do. Trace Brewing had multiple pride events this year that drew huge crowds. X Shadyside and the Fitness Factory are the closest gyms I haven't been in either, so I couldn't tell you if they have a huge gay presence.īloomfield/Garfield is starting to get more gay you're likely to see more non-binary and queer folks around Friendship Park and walking up Penn Ave. You definitely see gay couples walking around the area. Shadyside in general is populated by predominately white, grad students and young professionals, so most of the gay folks are mostly cis men who can afford to live in the neighborhood as it continues to get more expensive. For the past few years, they've hosted a pride event on Ellsworth, and you can still see the rainbow crosswalks they painted for the festival in 2019. You're right in that Shadyside is probably the closest thing to a gayborhood in Pittsburgh, though! Before the pandemic, it was home to two of the more popular gay bars (RIP Element) now there's just 5801, but that's still a big, popular spot. Unfortunately, I'm not sure you're going to find what you're looking for in terms of immediately recognizable gay spaces.
